Most upland game bird hunters need something to keep occupied
between our hunting seasons. Preserve hunting is a poor substitute
for hunting wild birds. What is needed is an opportunity to hunt
wild birds over good dogs in our off season. Alberto Molina Gomez,
an Argentinian hunting and fishing guide with a passion for pointing
dogs and wing shooting for wild birds, has established Argentina
Wing Shooting providing wing shooting opportunities during our
summer months.
American Airlines has a comfortable, overnight flight from Miami
with an early AM arrival in Buenos Aires. After a good rest, a
bit of exploring and an excellent meal the next morning you board
a domestic flight to Alberto's home town of Bahia Blanca. Alberto
will meet his guests at the airport and drive the 100 hundred
kilometers to his cabana in Sierra de la Ventana which will be
the center of operations for the next few days. You will be hunting
different areas; hills, plains, river bottoms, ocean side and
diversity of game birds.
The Perdiz Chica is a mottled tan/brown bird which resembles
an overgrown Pharaoh Quail. They whistle and run through the thin
pasture cover and then take to the air with the same whirring
sound of our Bob-White Quail. The little partridge will pop up
out of the grass some 20-25 yards ahead of the dog, giving us
a very respectable 35- 40 yard target. Fast rising, speedy birds,
at a good distance; an excellent shooting challenge.
These pasture fields were generally surrounded by mounds of irrigation
ditches and dense grasses. The Perdiz Coloradas, the Red Partridge
of Argentina, inhabit these dense grasses. The Perdiz Coloradas
has a distinct red wing band with a plover type beak. Fast and
strong, these birds are a truly memorable game bird.
The dove shooting in Province of Buenos Aires of Argentina is
very different than the flock busting cannonades for the White-winged
Dove of Cordoba. You will hunt the Paloma Montessa, a dove 1/3
larger than our park pigeons, a very intelligent and a fast strong
flyer. Stationed for maximum camouflage along the banks of a fast
flowing stream (which by the way has a healthy population of Rainbow
Trout) you will experience fast passing shoots; par excel lance.
The White-winged Dove will drop when struck by only a few pellets
but these sturdy Montessa are natures B-17's.
These river stations have the added advantage of presenting outstanding
duck shooting for the Mallard sized Marcero and the Teal sized
Barcino. These beautiful birds closely resemble the Blue Winged
and Green Winged Teal in their coloration and markings. Later
one can vary our technique to hunt Stuttgart style, with the doves
diving into openings in evergreen stands.
Your days will be filled with memorable hunting, unbelievable
"Tail Gate lunches" and four star evening meals, but
your sharpest memories will be of the magnificent wing shooting
and crouching canines of Argentina.
